Westerlund 1 is a rich, very dense object of high C3 quality. Its parallax locates it at a moderate* distance, near the mid-plane, affected by extremely high extinction. It is catalogued as an extremely massive, very young cluster (see Parameters). It is moderately studied in the literature.
